About me
About me

Hello! My name is Karin Steyn. Thanks for stopping here to learn a little more about me. I'm a retired high school teacher. I taught Grades 10 -12, English Home Language and English First Additional Language.

I live in South Africa, my country of birth, but I spent the first 14 years of my life growing up in Zimbabwe (Rhodesia at the time).

I have written six books and many online articles. I wrote my first children's novel, 'Pop-In Jay Pomp', in 2003, with supporting educational material for the classroom. The book was first published by Schiel & Denver in 2006. I have also written a romance adventure called 'Mareijke's Courage' and a crime romance called 'The 6th Commandment: Thou Shalt not Kill'. My fourth book, 'The Power is Yours', is a motivational book for teenagers. The last of my books to date is 'Through the Bark', a fantasy genre for teens and 'Implicitly', a romance novel about learning to trust. My books are available through Groep7 Book Shop

In 2011, I entered a Quickfox Publishing poetry competition. My poem 'Crossing the Border' was selected and published in the 2011 anthology, The Ground's Ear. Some of my poems are available on my website. My poetry book is named 'Breathing African Air' and is still to be completed. My first short story, 'Makeshift Moments', has been published in the 2014 edition of Fingerprints.

My online articles can be found at Ezine Articles and HubPages. I have my own blog: Simply, because I can.

At the age of 48, I decided to study my Honours Bachelor of Education degree in Teaching and Learning. I graduated in April, 2016 (aged 50). This was probably one of the most challenging things I have ever done and I'm proud of my achievement. I was diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy in 2019 and retired from teaching in 2021.

I have been married to Nick Steyn since 9 January 1988, and we have two beautiful children: Jana (born in 1992) and Colin (born in 1997).
